    Study on Mechanical Properties of PP/Wollastonite Composites

    Polypropylene (PP) is one of the five general plastics, which is widely used in various fields due to its low density, good mechanical properties, easy molding and processing, and corrosion resistance. But the biggest disadvantage of PP is its brittleness, low impact strength, especially poor low-temperature impact performance, low dimensional accuracy, insufficient rigidity and poor weather resistance. In order to further improve the properties of PP, domestic and foreign scholars have carried out a lot of research on its modification, in which needle shaped wollastonite is used to replace glass fiber as a reinforcing material to fill PP, which has also been developed rapidly in recent years. Natural wollastonite has good electrical insulation and chemical stability, low oil absorption and low price (one tenth of that of glass fiber). When it is added to the polymer, it can obviously improve the dimensional stability of the material, prevent thermal collapse, improve the tensile strength, tensile modulus, thermal deformation temperature and creep resistance of the material, and reduce the shrinkage and warpage of the material.
    Liang Jizhao, et al. of South China University of Technology, prepared polypropylene (PP)/wollastonite composites by melt blending. The effects of wollastonite surface treatment and its amount on the mechanical properties of PP/wollastonite composites were investigated. The results showed that the tensile strength, breaking strength and impact strength of the composite filled with wollastonite powder modified by coupling agent betaine (CAB) were higher than those of the untreated system. With the increase of the amount of modified wollastonite, the tensile strength and breaking strength of PP/wollastonite composites increased first and then decreased. When the amount of modified wollastonite was 10 phr, the tensile strength and breaking strength of the composites reached the maximum, which were increased by 17% and 63% respectively compared with pure PP; In addition, when the content of modified wollastonite is 40phr, the impact strength of the composite reaches the maximum value (2.59kJ/m2), which is 29% higher than that of pure PP.
