NOAA Scientists Discover Real SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star in Atlantic Ocean

Marine scientists may have found the underwater city of Bikini Bottom, swimming on an actual version of SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star.

Divers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) at the Retriever Seamount in the Atlantic Ocean, just 200 miles from New York City, spotted a yellow sea sponge and a pink starfish, resembling the iconic Nickelodeon due , The New York Post reported.

Excited by his discovery, scientist Christopher Mah shared the photo on Twitter: “I normally avoid these referees… but WOW. SpongeBob and Patrick in REAL LIFE! “

“I thought it would be fun to make the comparison, which for once was actually quite comparable to the iconic images / colors of cartoon characters,” Mah added.

The team of researchers from NOAA’s Okeanos Explorer were observing the seamount on board using motor vehicles (ROVs) when they spotted the Hertwigia sponge and the Chondraster starfish.

While he said the comparison was fun, Mah pointed out that the actual portrayals of Spongbob and Patrick are very different from their cartoon version.

“As a starfish biologist, most of Patrick and SpongeBob’s representations are incorrect,” he added.

Sthe sponges are either asexual or sexual, and their reproduction results from the fragmentation of their body, according to Our marine species.

Starfish are carnivorous, and they eat sponges, crabs, clams, oysters and coral.
