(NEXSTAR) – A huge freighter loaded with luxury cars was burning and drifting in the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday.
All 22 crew on board were safely evacuated and vessels passing through the area were warned of the vessel’s fire, according to the Portuguese Navy.
The ship, called Felicity Ace, is 650 feet long. Its closest landmass are the Azores Islands, an isolated archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic.
The Felicity Ace can carry over 17,000 metric tons of cargo. That ship was carrying Porsches and other Volkswagen Auto Group vehicles, according to FleetMon, a site that tracks shipping logistics and ship news.
“A number of our cars are part of the cargo. We are in contact with the shipping company and the details of the cars on board are now known. Customers affected by the incident are being contacted by their dealership,” Porsche said in a statement to Fox News.
Typically, car carrier ships carry thousands of vehicles over multiple decks in their hold.
The vehicle carrier was on a transatlantic journey from Germany to the United States. The ship left Germany on Feb. 10 and was expected to arrive in Rhode Island on Feb. 23, according to ship traffic logs.
The Portuguese Navy said the fire was still burning on Thursday. Footage posted to YouTube showed white smoke billowing from the ship.
